EVP Report                                                                                     April 2007

I would like to start this months report off by welcoming aboard all the new Members to our Local. Most of them have been with CWA for quite some time, but just recently merged with Local 7818. It is always nice to have new people to visit, especially when they are in good moods and for the most part, have a good relationship with their employer. I hope all of you will be comfortable with us here at 7818. Again… welcome!

For all the other members that Local 7818 represents, with the exception of those at Qwest, I’m glad to see that things must be running fairly smooth since I haven’t seen many (if any) grievances come across my desk. It’s always a pleasure to have Members that are treated with the respect they deserve. There is always is the occasional disagreement that comes up, but can usually be resolved in a fair and equitable manner at the lowest level possible.

Now, for those Members at Qwest. What can I say? Most of you want respect from your Employer. Most of you have certainly earned it. Too bad those days are gone. It was just a few years ago that CWA and Qwest would, for the most part, work with each other. Now, coming to work is like walking into a lions den with meat strapped to your back…blindfolded. You just want to get your work done and truly do quality work to satisfy the customer and more importantly, walk away from the job feeling good about what you just did. Then go back to the yard, empty your trash, restock your truck, do your time, go home. Come back and do it again the next day. Aaahh, the past.

I keep telling myself that I am going to stop writing such negative reports. But then I tell myself, “Self, these reports aren’t negative…they’re factual!” Next meeting is April 12th, 2007 .

I would also like to welcome aboard our newest Stewards; Mike Nichols with Qwest and Katie Kolbet with DEX. They just completed their training on March 22, 2007 . Aaron Zito with the Spokesman Review also completed the training although he has been a Steward for some time already. Thanks for stepping up. I’m sure that the Members will be thanking you also. Dean Carlson has come forward and took the responsibility of Chief Steward for both the CDT’s and Construction. Thanks Dean. Remember to thank your Stewards for all they do. Their will be an updated list on your Union Bulletin Board soon.
